The Ultimate Tenant Checklist for Moving In and Out
This is a subtitle for your new post

Moving in or out of a rental property can be a stressful experience, but with proper preparation and organization, you can make the process smooth and hassle-free. At BMP Property Management, we encourage tenants to follow this checklist to ensure all expectations are met and to protect both your deposit and the condition of the property.
Moving In Checklist
- Inspect the Property Thoroughly
- Walk through the property and note any existing damages, stains, or maintenance issues.
- Use the provided inspection checklist to document your findings and submit it within the required timeframe (typically 72 hours after move-in).
- Take photos of anything you document for your records.
- Set Up Utilities
- Ensure all utilities are transferred into your name before receiving the keys.
- Confirm accounts are active for water, gas, electricity, and internet services as applicable.
- Review Your Lease
- Familiarize yourself with lease terms, including maintenance responsibilities, rules for decor, and policies on pets, smoking, or subletting.
- Test Appliances and Fixtures
- Confirm that all appliances, smoke detectors, light fixtures, and plumbing are functioning properly. Report any issues immediately to avoid being held responsible later.
- Change Furnace Filters
- If applicable, check and replace furnace filters to ensure HVAC systems function efficiently from the start.
- Plan Your Move-In
- Coordinate a move-in schedule to avoid any conflicts with neighbors.
- Use protective coverings on floors and walls to prevent damages during furniture placement.
Moving Out Checklist
- Provide Notice
- Follow the notice period specified in your lease agreement. Failure to do so may result in additional charges or loss of deposit.
- Repair Minor Damages
- Patch and paint small nail holes and address minor damages caused during your tenancy.
- Replace burnt-out light bulbs and ensure all fixtures and appliances are in working order.
- Deep Clean
- Clean the entire property thoroughly, including:
- Bathrooms and kitchen (sink, oven, fridge, and cabinets).
- Carpets, floors, and baseboards.
- Windows, blinds, and vents.
- Remove all personal belongings and trash before leaving.
- Address Yard Care
- If responsible for yard maintenance, mow the lawn, remove weeds, and clean up outdoor areas.
- Return Keys
- Return all keys, remotes, and access cards on the agreed-upon date.
- Provide a Forwarding Address
- Share your new address for the return of your security deposit or any final correspondence.
Maximizing Your Deposit Return
At BMP Property Management, we don’t aim to profit from your security deposit—we simply ask that you leave the property in good condition. By following these steps, you can avoid unnecessary charges and receive your deposit back promptly.
With this checklist, moving in or out doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Stay organized, communicate with your property manager, and focus on leaving the property as clean and damage-free as possible.
